Lemmings commit mass suicide
Myth busted
Lemmings do not deliberately jump to their deaths to control their population. They can disperse in large numbers, and some drown while crossing water.
The bit that matters
- Accidental deaths during dispersal are different from deliberate suicide.
- The 1958 film popularized staged behavior; that does not establish where the belief began.

Agency biologists reject deliberate mass suicide. Lemmings disperse when local conditions change, can cross water, and may drown. The article attributes staged White Wilderness footage to a CBC investigation.
